Microsoft sets new hardware requirements for Windows Phone

Microsoft has finally reduced the minimum hardware requirements for the Windows Phone platform, which until this point only had a high end set of requirements.

The camera is no longer mandatory for Windows Phone devices. Even gyroscope sensor which can be used to detect motion  is not set as mandatory for Windows Phones.

This drop is definitely a result of the Nokia Microsoft partnership, as Nokia has to be able to offer devices in the same price range as it's previous Symbian offerings if they are to use Windows Phone as their sole smartphone operating system. While we will continue to see premium Windows Phones we can also hope for a lower range of devices which will reach out to a wider audience.

The hardware requirements for Windows Phones are as follows:
  • Start, Search and Back button,
  • Big WVGA display that would render most pages in full-page width,
  • Capacitive 4-point multi-touch display,
  • Connectivity via cellular data and Wi-Fi,
  • 256MB RAM or more, 8 gigs internal memory,
  • A-GPS,
  • Accelerometer.
Optional Hardware
  • Rear Camera
  • Front Camera
  • Digital Compass
  • Gyroscope
