[Guide] How to Jailbreak iOS 5 using Redsn0w 0.9.9b5 (tethered)

This guide will demonstrate jailbreaking iOS 5 on the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad and iPod Touch 3G and iPod Touch 4G using Redsn0w 0.9.9b5. The iPhone 4S and iPad 2 are currently not supported by this jailbreak method.

NOTE - Jailbreaking your device may void it's warranty. While jailbreaking is not illegal Apple warns users that jailbreaking may cause issues with your software and instability of your system. Please do not attempt to jailbreak your device unless you are aware of the consequences of the process and the advantages/disadvantages of jailbreaking.

NOTE - Jailbreaking is a process that ads features to your device not available in Apple's software. The process and support is managed by the iPhone Dev-Team. Please carefully read the notices and declaimers before proceeding with jailbreaking as certain processes may be irreversible

UNLOCK - Those you rely on an unlock method through Gevey SIM or Ultrsn0w (old basebands) SHOULD NOT update using iTunes. Instead use Redsn0w to create a custom firmware which will retain the old baseband. Please follow the steps relevant to you which will be labeled [UNLOCK] during the guide.

  1. Download and install iTunes 10.5 for PC or Mac.
  2. Connect your iOS device and backup your data.
  3. Download and install iOS 5 manually or directly using iTunes
[UNLOCK] - Download but do not install iOS 5 if your device requires unlocking.
  4. Download  and run Redsn0w 0.9.9b5
  5. Click 'Jailbreak' and select 'Install Cydia' and follow the onscreen instructions to enter DFU mode.
[UNLOCK] - Click 'Extras' and select 'Custom IPSW'. Select the iOS 5 file for your device which you previously downloaded  and allow Redsn0w to create a custom firmware file for you.

  6. Once you are in DFU Mode Rensn0w will perform the jailbreak automatically by fetching the required files from Apple's servers.(You wont have to select the IPSW file manually)
  7. Boot into Jailbreak mode (tethered)
    • Enter DFU Mode
    • Select Extras and Select Just Boot
    • To boot with jailbreak repeat these steps if you reboot your device.
Now that you have jailbroken your device if you wish to unlock it, you can find the guide to unlock iOS 5 here.
