Why Windows 8 is the actual dawn of the post PC era and not the iPad

With Apple's launch of the iPad, Apple claimed that they had ushered in the post PC era. But with Microsoft's release of Windows 8, Microsoft has shown that their will be no post PC era without the PC.

Both iOS and Android are excellent mobile operating systems. But anyone who does more than browse the web or read emails will tell you that they cannot replace their normal Windows or Mac computers with a tablet. The reason for this is that a tablet (mobile) OS is nowhere near as robust as a regular operating system. Both Apple and Google plan to eventually merge their mobile platforms with their desktop platforms, but Microsoft has already taken that step with Windows 8.

Windows 8 is not a mobile operating system. In fact it is the same full blown version of Windows which you see running on your normal PCs, but it now can now do all the things that made a tablet stand out, like last a day on one battery charge or resume from sleep in just a couple of seconds. Not only can it do that but it can also load our full versions of Photoshop, Visual Studio or Outlook on the same device.

Windows is probably one of the most hardware friendly operating systems and it's hardware support has grown even more in it's latest release. By providing support for ARM processors, Windows can now operate on form factors which offer upto a day of battery life and resume instantly. On these devices Windows will have sensors like accelerometers, proximity sensors and gyroscopes which allow popular motion based games and apps to fine their way to Windows.

So while Apple and Google work towards bringing desktop like applications to their tablet platforms. Windows 8 tablets will have it built in. It will seamlessly integrate with all your computers and you will be able to resume your work where you left off no mater if you are home or at work. Windows 8 is built on web technology so you have access to all your online content right from your Windows machine.

I am excited that Microsoft has taken such a wide leap with Windows. I am curious to see how well the OS will perform on low end hardware and if it will outperform it's competition, but I am confident on the steps Microsoft has taken into this post PC era with nothing other than a PC.
