Ovi Maps has received an update which was demonstrated at Nokia World 2010. This new version (3.06) which is still in beta can be downloaded from Nokia Beta Labs. The new version introduces a more powerful search, improved place page, more sharing options, public transportation lines in 85 cities and live traffic reports. Added on is an all new feature called 'check in'. Check the video below and the feature list following.

  • Visually refreshed main menu and icons,
  • New maps with public transport lines (as a new map layer) for subways, trams and trains in 80+ cities around the world. Just click the map toolbox icon and select Transit lines,
  • Improved search experience - find places and addresses around you -- or anywhere in the world -- fast and easily. Browse places or enter a keyword in the search box. Now withsuggestions and "did you mean?" functionality,

Some games were also demoed for the newly launched Symbian^3 platform. Two such games are Angry Birds and Hero of Sparta. Check their demo videos below. You can check their demo videos below:

Angry Birds for Symbian^3

Hero of Sparta for Symbian^3
Looks like Nokia is finally playing catch up in the Games department. I hope this will bring about more popular titles introduced for the Symbian^3 platform.

The 'Make an App' competition was also a feature of the Nokia World 2010, where ideas from the public were collected and voted for for a chance to have the 13 top ideas featured and the contributors rewarded with Brand New N8 devices. The top prize was a whooping $100,000. Check out a clip from that event below:

Some Fancy hardware was also introduced at the Nokia World 2010 event. Check some of them below:

The Nokia Charging Plate (DT-600) was introduced. Which can replace excess chargers and wires lying around. Check this post for more information on this device.

The Nokia Plug & Touch was also demoed, which can turn your TV into a touch screen device. Check the video of this device in action below:

Thats it for my post on Nokia World 2010. The event was closed by the incoming CEO, Stephan Elop. Nokia World 2010 saw the introduction of some brand new mobile devices and improved developer tools. Over the two days of this event it was visited by over 5,000 people who include operators, developers, business partners and media personal.

With the dust settling down on the event, all eyes will shift to the outcome, Will the new Symbian^3 devices boost Nokia back to the top of the mobile world? or Will Apple, Google and the soon to be released Windows Phone 7 rule the roost the year ahead. The judgment is in the hands of the public.
