[Guide] How to install Android 4.1 Jelly Bean on the Google Galaxy Nexus



The will be one of the first handsets to get Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and Google has promised to start rolling out the update in July.

But developers who got their hands on the official OTA update file of Android 4.1 with their new Galaxy Nexus during the have managed to port it to the Google Galaxy Nexus (GSM).


[NOTE] Since this isn't an official build, please don’t expect full stability. You may experience certain bugs during operation. Since you wont have long to wait, we recommend waiting for July to obtain the official update.

[NOTE] We do not recommend installing unofficial ROMs unless you are fully aware of the consequences. You may experience loss of data or device malfunctioning if the guide is not followed properly. Please proceed at your own risk.

[NOTE] This ROM is only for the GSM variant of the Galaxy Nexus and not for the CDMA version which is available through Verizon and Sprint.'
Before you proceed make sure your device is rooted and you have ClockworkMod Recovery installed. If you haven’t you can follow our guide to root the Galaxy Nexus here and the guide to Flash ClockWorkMod Recovery here.
  1. Download the following files from XDA Developers
    • Android 4.1 Jelly Bean ROM
    • Root Fix (not required for updated (v2) ROM)
    • Radio Baseband (XXLF1)

  2. Put the downloaded files into the root directory of your Galaxy Nexus.

  3. Switch off your device and turn it back on using Volume Down + Power.

  4. You will be taken to ClockWorkMod Recovery
    • Take a nandroid backup of your device
    • From the main menu – wipe your data, do a factory reset and wipe Dalvik cache.
    • Select install zip from sdcard > choose zip from sdcard  and select the Jelly Bean ROM you downloaded.
    • Select install zip from sdcard > choose zip from sdcard and select the radio baseband file you downloaded.
    • Select install zip from sdcard > choose zip from sdcard and select the radio baseband file you downloaded. [This is required if you want to remain rooted after the update]

  5. Once you are done flashing the 3 files onto your device select reboot system from the main menu of ClockWorkMod.

  6. Your device will now boot directly into Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. You can restore your backed up data and enjoy your latest Android treat.
