The Oppo N3 was announced during an official event in Singapore as the successor to the unique Oppo N1. You get an upgraded version of the swivelling camera, which replaces the traditional front and rear cameras on regular smartphones and the usual hardware enhancements you will expect from a newer device.
This time around, Oppo has chosen to reduce the screensize from 5.9 inches down to 5.5 inches. You still get the 1080p resolution, which results in a 400ppi pixel density. You would obviously expect the Oppo N3 to be much smaller because of its smaller screen size. But with 6.34" x 3.03" x 0.39" (161.2 x 77 x 9.9mm) dimensions and 6.77 oz (192g) weight, it is noticeably shorter, but actually thicker, and not much lighter than the Oppo N1.
The smaller size has also resulted in a smaller battery, which is now 3000mAh, compared to the 3610mAh battery in the Oppo N1. Fortunately the Oppo N3 comes with OPPO's VOOC technology, which allows one to charge their phone to 75% capacity in just 30 minutes.
Obviously the key feature on Oppo's N series is its swiveling camera, which now has a motorized mechanism, made in partnership with Schneider Electric. This allows the sensor to rotate around up to 206 degrees, which will allow it to take panoramic pictures automatically, without requiring the user to spin the device around. The camera also features a Tracking Focus feature, which should help users keep moving objects in focus.
On the back of the device is the O-Touch panel which can be used as a touch pad, to scroll around the UI and launch apps. This has been upgraded with a fingerprint scanner, which users can assign to different fingerprints in order to perform various functions and launch apps, expanding the phone's quick access functionality.
Other hardware includes 32GB of internal storage which can be expanded through microSD, and a 2.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon 801 processor with 2GB of RAM.
The device also comes with an O-Click remote control - a companion device, which allows one to turn the camera around, take a picture, or control music playback from a distance.
On the software side, you get Android 4.4 KitKat, which has Oppo's Color OS User interface on top of it. The latest version 2.0i provides enhanced user experience, with gesture-based controls, floating notifications, and other useful features.
The Oppo N3 will go on sale by the end of 2014 and will be priced at $649.
