Today Lenovo unveiled its second generation of YOGA tablets. The new Lenovo YOGA Tablet 2 is available in two variants - one runs Android 4.4 KitKat, while the other runs Windows 8.1. Once you have selected an operating system of your choosing, you can also pick between the 8 inch or the 10.1 inch variants of the device. So in reality you have four different YOGA Tablet 2 models you can choose from.
Design
The original Lenovo YOGA Tablet was known for its unique design, which offered a great level of flexibility, as the user of the slate could position it in one three different stances – Hold, Tilt, and Stand. With the Yoga Tablet 2, Lenovo introduces a redesigned kickstand that allows users to make use of a fourth mode and comfortably “hang” their device so that they can use the tablet hands-free. The hang feature comes courtesy of the improved kickstand which now rotates close to 180 degrees. The manufacturer also kept an ear close to the ground and enhanced the overall stability of the device while the latter is being positioned in Stand mode.
The front of the device sports a pair of large-chamber speakers, and while it's pretty unclear if these are stereo ones, Lenovo says that they flaunt Dolby Audio and Wolfson Mater HiFi support.
Hardware
Besides the size and OS differences, the YOGA Tablet 2 mostly shares the same hardware across all four models. You get an IPS LCD one with a resolution of 1200 x 1920 pixels, which has a 178-degree viewing angle. This should result in a 283ppi pixel density on the 8 inch model and a 226ppi pixel density on the 10.1 inch variant.
In terms of storage, the Windows variant has a slight advantage of 32GB storage, compared to the 16GB found on its Android counterpart. Storage expansion is handled by a microSD card, with as much as 128GB of additional microSD storage available as an option.
The tablets come with an 8MP rear camera with a glare-reducing BSI-2 sensor and a 1.6MP front facing camera for video calling. LTE capability is available for both Android models and the 10 inch Windows model, but only in select regions and, unfortunately, the USA is not among them. Wi-Fi will take over where LTE is not an option.
While the exact battery size is unknown, Lenovo claims the Android version can give you as much as 18 hours of battery life on a single charge, while the Windows model will offer 15 hours. The tablets are outfitted with 1.86GHz quad-core Intel Atom Z3745 processors which are 64-bit capable. You also get 2GB of LPDDR3 RAM to keep your applications running smoothly.
Pricing and Availability
The Android versions of the Yoga Tablet 2 are immediately available from Lenovo - the smaller, 8-inch one retails for $249.99, while the larger one sells for $299.99. Their Windows counterparts will arrive a little bit later to the party - the 8" Lenovo Yoga Tablet 2 will be available directly from Lenovo in November and will fetch a $299.99 price tag, while the 10" goodness will arrive on BestBuy's shelves in late October and will your set you back $399.99.
