Currently developers are being treated to Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1 (GDR1), which brings several enhancements to OEMs along with a few new features like Live Folders and Cortana enhancements. However it seems that Microsoft may already be working on Update 2 (GDR2) for Windows Phone 8.1.
The GDR1 update carried the 8.10.14157.200 OS version, but a new 8.15.12375.0 OS version has been spotted on the WP Bench database. The notable jump in the version number indicates that this could be a reasonably big update.
So what exactly does Update 2 have to offer? Unfortunately that is not yet known. There is a good chance that Microsoft will continue enhancing the Windows Phone platform for OEMs by including support for 2K resolution displays and Snapdragon 805 processors. These enhancements should allow OEMs like HTC to continue producing flagship versions of their smartphones on both Android and Windows Phone platforms.
The second update to Windows Phone 8.1 may be released to developers later this year, possibly in October. However we don't expect the final version to surface until early 2015.
