[Guide] How to perform a BigPart Repartition Upgrade on your Motorola Xoom



The Motorola Xoom is a very significant device as it not only the first real Android tablet, but it is also the first unnamed Nexus tablet. Even though the Xoom was well specced and future proof when it was first launched, its 1GHz Tegra 2 processor and 1280 x 800 pixel resolution feel aged next to newer devices.


While its dual-core processor and 1GB of RAM should still be able to handle Android, its stock partition layout is not allowing it to get newer versions of Android. According to Motorola there simply isn't enough space on the device’s /system partition to house the more recent versions of Android.

Fortunately thanks to the openness of Android, the development community have found a way around this limitation.

Senior XDA member realjumy (along with some help from Schischu and rchtk) were able to breathe new life into this device by creating BigPart.

Updating your device to the new partition layout is a fairly straightforward process. You must first load a new custom recovery. That recovery is then used to essentially perform a series of wipes and formats. And after all is said and done, your device will be repartitioned.

[NOTE] It is important to note that once you change your partition layout, you must only flash ROMs that are compatible with the BigPart partition layout. Please download a compatible ROM before you continue.

  1. Root your Motorola Xoom. You can follow our guide on how to root your Motorola Xoom.

  2. Download and install Goo Manager from the Google Play Store.
    • open Goo Manager. 
    • Tap menu then hit Install OpenRecoveryScript. Tap Yes. 
    • Verify that the filename displays your device's code name [openrecovery-twrp-2.6.3.0-wingray.img] and hit Yes. 
    • The file will download and your device will reboot and install the recovery automatically.

  3. Boot into TWRP recovery and create backups of your data. Copy the data to your microSD card and onto your computer for safe keeping.
    [NOTE] Data in your microSD card will not be erased during this process, but  we recommend keeping it cleared in any case.
  4. Download TWRP 2.6.3.0 BigPart by R.A.H

  5. Download a BigPart compatible ROM (we have linked to OmniROM 4.4.2, you can find out BigPart compatible ROMs on our website using the search function or on XDA Developers. Make sure you also download GApps.

  6. Copy the above two files to your microSD card and reboot into recovery.

  7. Click install, select the TWRP BigPart zip file and 'Swipe to Confirm Flash. Don't reboot just yet.

  8. Click Home and go into wipe menu
    • select Advanced Wipe and check everything but Micro SDcard.
    • Swipe to Wipe and wait for your data to be wiped
    • Click Back and return to TWRP Home by clicking the Home icon on top of the page.

  9. Click 'Reboot' on Home menu
    • Select the Recovery option
    • Ignore the 'No OS Installed!' message and Swipe to Reboot
    • When asked to install SuperSU, select 'Do Not Install'.

  10. Your device will reboot back into recovery
    • When asked for password (system assumes data is encrypted, but it is not)
    • Click Cancel to return to TWRP Home menu.
    • Go to Wipe menu, select 'Format Data' and type in "yes" when prompted.
    • Once completed press the Home button to return to main TWRP menu.
    • Go to 'Wipe', select Advanced Wipe
    • Select 'System' and 'Cache' and Swipe to Wipe
    • Once completed press the Home button to return to main TWRP menu.

  11. Click 'Reboot' on Home menu
    • Select the Recovery option
    • Ignore the 'No OS Installed!' message and Swipe to Reboot
    • When asked to install SuperSU, select 'Do Not Install'.

  12. When you boot back into Recovery, select Mount
    • You should see "cache" "data" and "sdcard" checked. "System" will be unchecked. Check it to confirm it mounts, then uncheck it.
      [NOTE] You are now repartitioned

  13. Return to the main menu by clicking the 'Home' button on the top and select Install
    • Recovery should show your microsd storage by default. If not, using the navigation panel, navigate to root then go into "sdcard".
    • Flash your rom, BigPart boot image package, and any other resources as you normally would.
