BlackBerry 10.2.1 runs Android, not just apps

BlackBerry 10.2.1 runs Android 4.2.2BlackBerry recently started rolling out their BlackBerry 10.2.1 software update and BlackBerry Z10 users on Verizon were the first to get access to the latest version of BlackBerry 10 OS. As you may know, the BlackBerry 10.2.1 update brings an improved version of the Android Runtime, which allows more Android apps to run on BlackBerry 10 devices. However a newly released video of Nova Launcher running on a BlackBerry Z30 with BlackBerry 10.2.1 shows that the device is in fact running Android 4.2.2 as well.

While not everything is working as it would on an Android model, you can actually get the official YouTube for Android app running with some quick tweaks. After the update, APK files do not have to be converted and can be installed directly onto an updated BB10 phone. Obviously, certain core features of Android cannot be installed and trying to download the Google Play Store results results in it crashing.

Could this be a subtle step for BlackBerry to move to the Android platform? So far, new CEO John Chen hasn't expressed any desire to switch, but big decisions will have to be made to turn the company's state around and you never know what may happen in this case.
