Motorola Moto X officially announced

Today Motorola and Google officially announced and unveiled the Motorola Moto X. Being the first device from Motorola under Google's management, you can quickly see a heavy Nexus influence in its design and software. However Motorola has added its own twists which make the Moto X unique in its own way.

The 4.7 inch near-edge-to-edge AMOLED display has a 720 by 1280 pixel resolution and a 316 ppi pixel density. While it may not be comparable with the full HD displays on modern flagships its still a decent offering.

Motorola has included a 10 megapixel ClearPixel camera with the Moto X which is likely the same as what we recently saw on the  and . The camera promises to offer better low light photos and allows 1080p video capture. The Moto X also includes a secondary 2 megapixel camera for video calls which also supports 1080p video.

If the real world results of the ClearPixel camera look anything like the photo sample tweeted by Motorola, we will have a clear winner in our hands.

The Moto X will be powered by the Motorola X8 Mobile Computing System, which combines a dedicated natural language processor, a contextual computing processor, a dual-core 1.7 GHz Snapdragon S4 Pro CPU and quad-core Adreno 320 GPU. This adds up to eight working cores, which of course inst the same as Samsung's Exynos or the newly announced true octa-core from MediaTek.

While the Moto X runs a near stock Android 4.2 Jelly Bean experience, the company has added some unique twists that gives the device a unique experience. You have Touchless Control which allows you to control your Moto X which just your voice. Thanks to the dedicated natural language processor, you can enable the Moto X to constantly listen for commands. That feature is tied to Google Now, so the commands themselves will be issued by simply saying "OK, Google," followed by the command itself. You can use Touchless Control to set an alarm, get directions, search the web, check the weather and more. Next you have Active Display which makes use of the AMOLED screen technology to light up a specific area of your display. Active display will show you the time and active notifications without affecting your battery life. Finally you have Quick Camera Capture which allows you to turn on your camera with a wrist twisting gesture.

The most important information about the Moto X is its customizability. Users will be able to choose between 2 front colors, 18 back colors and 7 accent colors. You can also print a custom message on the back of the phone, or set up a customized boot-up message prior to receiving the device. All this will be done over at motomaker.com where you can design a device of you choice and have it shipped out to you for free within four days.

The Moto X will be available in the U.S. through five of its major carriers initially - Verizon Wireless, AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and US Cellular. It will be priced at $199 with a two-year contract for its 16GB model while the 32GB version will cost you $249.
