[Guide] How to Jailbreak iOS 6.1 on pre-A5 devices using Redsn0w

Apple recently released iOS 6.1 which brings a few improvements, enhancements and bug fixes to iPhones, iPads and iPod Touches. If you rely on jailbreaking your device a tethered jailbreak method is currently available for pre-A5 devices using Redsn0w. If you prefer waiting for the untethered jailbreak for iOS 6 on iPhone 5 you won't have long to wait as it is excepted to be released this Sunday.

A full guide on how to jailbreak your pre-A5 device on iOS 6.1 using Redsn0w follows:

[DISCLAIMER] We do not recommend jailbreaking your device unless you are fully aware of the risks of doing so. Improperly following this guide can result in loss of data or device malfunction. So please proceed at your own risk and know that the developers of this jailbreak nor this site will assume any responsibility for the outcome.

[NOTE] If you rely on unlocking your device, it is recommended that you do not upgrade to iOS 6.1 at this time. It is best that you wait for the untethered jailbreak, which should be just around the corner.

  1. Download iOS 6.1
    -
  2. Download iOS 6.0 which is also required for this jailbreak to work
    -
  3. Download Redsn0w 0.9.15b3 [ WINDOWS | MAC ]
    -
  4. Extract the contents of Redsn0w and run the executable file.
    -

    -
  5. Head over to Extras > Select IPSW and select the iOS 6.0 IPSW and wait a few seconds until Redsn0w recognizes the file.
[NOTE] The Redsn0w tool hasn’t been updated to support iOS 6.1 at this point and therefore you are required to select iOS 6.0.
    -

    -
  6. Now select Jailbreak from Redsn0w’s main screen. On the next screen, click Next and select Cydia.
    -
  7. When you are prompted you need to boot your device into DFU mode and follow the onscreen instructions.
Wait for Redsn0w to complete its jailbreaking process using the Limera1n exploit and for Cydia will be installed. Once the jailbreak process is complete, select the “Autoboot this device when it connects in DFU mode” option. Your device will reboot and you should be jailbroken.

Booting into tethered mode

Since this is a tethered jailbreak, you will need to boot your device into a jailbroken state on every reboot. In order to do this you will have to connect your device to your computer:
  • Run Redsn0w
  • Go to Extras and select Just Boot
Since we very rarely turn off our smartphones, it is unlikely that you will have to run this step often. But for those who turn off their device regularly, this is one of the disadvantages of the tethered jailbreak.

The good news is the full untethered jailbreak is ready and is currently being tested. It is said to work on all iOS devices, so we will have an excellent jailbreak tool in our hands when it is released.
