[Android app] GMail updated with pinch-to-zoom

GMail for Android has been updated and brings some new features, performance improvements and bug fixes including the ability pinch-to-zoom  and swipe to archive or delete messages within the Gmail app. GMail for Android allows you to keep your conversations going everywhere you go. You can get access to your GMail account instantly through push notifications, read and respond to your conversations or search and find any email.

You can download the update directly on your device through the Google Play Store or by using the link which follows:

Its strange that Google took so long to enable this feature on their GMail client, and another surprising issue is that pinch to zoom is not enabled by default. In order to enable the feature you have to head over to Settings on your GMail app and enable the option ‘Auto-fit messages’.

Another new feature which has been introduced with the update is the ability to use swiping gestures to archive or delete messages. This feature can also be confusing to new users – The default swipe action will archive messages in your Inbox, Priority Inbox and other regular labels you have created. However using the swipe gesture in the All Mail or Sent Mail folders will result in the email being deleted.

Google has also introduced the ability to attach photos and videos from inside the GMail app, rather than sharing from another app. This is another feature which you may feel is a general requirement for the user, but Apple only released it with iOS 6.0 and Google has just decided to include it on their own client.

Finally you can now view larger photo previews and gallery view for photo attachments.

Keep in mind that these improvements will only be available for devices running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich or higher. The GMail update for older versions of Android will only include performance enhancements and bug fixes.
