We know that older Windows Phones will be receiving Windows Phone 7.8 instead of the newer Windows Phone 8 operating system. However Microsoft has not suggested when this update will happen. But it looks like the update may be ready for public consumption as it has been recently seen running on a Nokia Lumia 900.
The demonstration was made at the new ‘Lumia Experience Store’ located in Raffles City in Shanghai China. The report suggests that the Lumia 900 with Windows Phone 7.8 installed was displayed alongside the Nokia Lumia 510 and the Microsoft Surface RT tablet.
This is not the first time we have seen Windows Phone 7.8 demonstrated as Ben “The PC Guy” Rudolph demonstrated an early build of the platform back in June. But the operating system seems to have evolved quite a bit since then and we see several similarities to the recently announced Windows Phone 8 UI.
However one of the visitors who were able to test the Lumia 900 have suggested that they didn’t notice many new changes, other than for the new start screen. He also stated that there was no native screenshot capability not were there any changes to the camera UI. There have been contradictory reports suggesting that Windows Phone 7.8 will include a calendar sharing function and access to certain services like the Xbox Music store, but non of these have been confirmed at this time.
We are really disappointed by Microsoft’s choice to offer Windows Phone 7.8 instead of Windows Phone 8 for older Windows Phones, and wish the company will identify the loyalty of Windows Phone 7.5 owners.
We will continue to follow up on the release and updates on Windows Phone 7.8 and keep you informed as soon as the update is available for download.
