Bing Maps updated with Nokia powered traffic and geocoding

bing-maps-logo1As part of Microsoft’s partnership with Nokia we knew the companies would be sharing many of their technologies. We have already seen a few Nokia Windows Phones and Microsoft Office find its way to select Symbian devices. The next in line for some change looks to be Microsoft’s Bing Maps.

We can expect to see Bing Maps and Nokia Maps merged somewhere down the road, and that merger has begun with new features that Nokia has introduced to Bing Map users – Traffic and geocoding.

What's great is that you won't even have to update your Maps apps. The changes will already be showing up on the web version of Bing Maps and on your Windows Phones. While the traffic feature will be easier to spot, the geocoding is probably the more valuable feature update for Microsoft’s mapping solution.

Geocoding allows physical addresses (and places) to be  mapped to a latitude and longitude. This allows locations to be found much faster and for the directions to be much more accurate.

Traffic information is now displayed on Bing Maps and is color coded (green, yellow, red) and shows several local roads along with the major ones. The Nokia powered traffic feature on Bing Maps is available for 24 countries around the world and we can expect the feature to continue to improve.
