[Guide] How to enable mass storage mode on your Nokia Windows Phone

If you have owned a Nokia Symbian device you will be familiar with the device popping up as a mass storage device when you plug it into your computer. However Nokia Windows Phones rely on the Zune Desktop Software for you to transfer your photos, music and videos to and from your Nokia device.

The following guide will show you how to enable mass storage mode on your Nokia Windows Phone like the Nokia Lumia 800 or the Nokia Lumia 710.

NOTE - This guide is demonstrated on the Lumia 800 and requires a Windows computer with Zune Desktop Software installed.

NOTE - This process involves editing the registry on your Windows Computer. Please do not proceed unless you are aware of the consequences that may result from editing your registry.
  1. Open the registry editor by typing 'regedit' in the Start Menu or under Run.
    -
     -
  2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE in the leftpane and go to SYSTEM -> CurrentControlSet -> Enum -> USB-

    -
  3. Search for 'ZuneDriver' by clicking Find under the Edit Menu or by pressing Ctrl+Fon your keyboard.
    -
     -
  4. Right Click on Device Parameters and select Export (You can recover your registry if anything goes wrong)
    -
     -
  5. Select Device Parameters and edit the following registry values from the right pane.
    • ShowInShell and change its value from 0 to 1.
    • PortableDeviceNameSpaceExcludeFromShell and change its value from 1 to 0.
    • EnableLegacySupport from 0 to 1.
      -

      -
  6. Remove your Nokia Windows Phone and reinsert it. You should now see two portable devices appear under My Computer.
    -

That's it you should now be able to copy your music, video and photos directly onto your Nokia Windows Phone. One downside is that the music copied will be stored as an unknown album, probably since Zune cannot sync it's meta data properly.

Remember to eject your device before removing the USB cable.
