[Guide] How to install Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich on Nexus S


Google has already confirmed that the Google Nexus S will officially receive the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) update. But if you don't want to wait and try ICS right now, this guide will help you get it done.

The Nexus S has a 4" display, 16GB of storage and a 5MP camera. While it has only a 1GHz processor compared to the Google Galaxy Nexus which is powered by a dual core CPU, the device seams quite capable of handling ICS.



NOTE - The process of installing a custom/unofficial ROM is not supported by the device warranty. Please note that the process may result in an unusable device of done incorrectly. This process is for advanced users only, and we are not responsible for any damages caused by this ROM.

This release is a port of the Android ICS SDK. There is the possibility of having problems after installing this software. Below are a list of known issues.

  • NFC
  • Panorama Mode
  • Camera will force close for the 1st time
Please follow the steps carefully to install Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich on your Google Nexus S
  1. Backup your phone - The process will erase all content on your device, so make sure you backup everything onto your computer before you proceed.
  2. Root your device - You can follow our guide to rooting your Nexus S here, or follow the steps below:
    • Download and install OCR
    • Connect your device to your computer and install the supplied driver
    • Choose 32-bit or 64-bit mode depending on your PC. If you are not sure select 64-bit.
    • Make sure that USB debugging is turned off.
    • Execute run.bat as Administrator and follow the onscreen instructions.
    • Once the process is complete Your device
      • bootloader is now unlocked
      • is now rooted
      • has Clockwork Mod installed
  3. Install ICS - Now its time to install Android 4.0
    • Download
    • the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich ROM
    • Copy the .zip file to the root of the internal memory on your device.
    • Reboot to recovery mode
      • Power off device
      • Hold Power + Volume Up
    • Once inside the Clockwork Mod recovery, 
      • Select 'wipe data / factory reset'.
      • Then 'Install zip from memory card'.
      • Select 'Choose zip from memory card
      • Find your file and select it using the power button.
      • Confirm the instalation and let it complete.
