Nokia updating older Symbian smartphones

Now that Nokia is focusing on Symbian^3 and looking towards switching to Windows Phone in the near future older Symbian users would be under the impression that they have been forgotten.
But it looks like Nokia has something in store for them.

Not all Nokia users have switched to the newer Symbian devices and have stayed happy with their older Symbian 3.2 and Symbian 5.0 smart phones. Nokia has been working hard to improve the user experience on these handsets and is ready to release an update to target the following devices:

Symbian 3.2
  • Nokia E72
  • Nokia E52
  • Nokia E5
  • Nokia C5-00
  • Nokia 6700 slide

Symbian 5.0
  • Nokia C6-00
  • Nokia C5-03
  • Nokia 5230
  • Nokia 5235
  • Nokia 5250
  • Nokia X6
  • Nokia N97 mini
  • Nokia 5800 XpressMusic
  • Nokia 5530 XpressMusic

While I am sure many of the Symbian 5 users would rather have an update that brings their devices closer to Symbian^3, they will only get small flavors of the latest Symbian version.

The update will offer Nokia Browser 7.3 which is the same version that will be available on Symbian Anna. It will have faster browsing, support for International Domain Names (IDNs) and support for non-ASCII letters such as Arabic and Chinese.

An Ovi Maps update will also be offered within the new firmware. Symbian 3.2 devices will receive Ovi Maps 3 SR4 which offers indoor positioning through WiFi and Lonely Planet travel recommendations. Symbian 5.0 users will receive Ovi Maps 3 SR6 which ads public transport lines and check in services with social networking integration.

Messaging also receives an update with emoticons allowing you to express emotions on texts and MMS messages to your friends and family.

The update will be made available in stages with the Nokia C6-00 and Nokia 5230 receiving it first with the other devices to follow. You can update your devices from your device using the Over-the-Air update feature or using Ovi Suite's software update feature.

Does this update satisfy user's of these devices ? or should Nokia have done better ? Please leave your comments below
