[Guide] How to enable multi-touch on iPhone 4 running iOS 4.3

The multi-touch features are probably one of the greatest perks which will be available for the Apple iPad users with the upcoming iOS 4.3. These gestures include three finger app switching, pinch out to return to homescreen etc.

The guide which follows tells you how to get some of these features on your Apple iPhone 4 which doesn't look like it will be getting it by default.

[NOTE] This guide is for advanced users/developers. General users are warned to stay clear of this until the public release of iOS 4.3 and availability of better tools for jailbreaking your iDevice

  • Jailbreak your iPhone 4 using the guide posted here
  • After jailbreaking open Cydia and install OpenSSH.
  • Install Cyberduck on your Mac (WinSCP for Windows) to SSH to your iDevice.
  • SSH to your device and navigate to the following directory: System>Library>CoreServices>SpringBoard.app>N90.plist
  • Use a plist editor(PlistEdit Pro) or a text editor (TextWrangler) and edit the N90.plist file.
  • Add a Boolean statement 'multitasking-gestures' and set its value to 'True'.
  • Save, replace and respring the Springboard.
Thats it. You will now see the Multitouch gestures option under settings on your iPhone 4.

This should eventually work for other old iOS devices like the iPhone 3GS once a jailbreak method is available.
