[iOS app] Apple Store update brings first free item

The Apple Store for iOS app was recently updated and Apple promised to give away media from iTunes, an iBook or a new app for free each week. The first freebie comes in the form of app app – Color Zen which is normally priced at 99 cents. Color Zen is a new kind of puzzle game. One that invites you to put on your headphones, relax, and find your way through an abstract world of colors and shapes.

The only catch is that you have to be inside your local Apple Store in order to load the free items. We could consider this a clever way for Apple to lure new customers into their retails stores and sell some new devices along with the content.

Strangely our tests showed that you don’t really need to be inside an Apple Store in order to get the free app. Just open the Apple Store app, select your closest store and then select the Color Zen download which will be available to you. You will receive a unique redemption key which can be applied toward your download.

Apple’s CEO Tim Cook admitted that only a very small percentage of Apple’s customers were aware of the app and he hopes to use this promotion as means to boost sales of iOS devices in Apple stores. Apple Store employees have been instructed to install the Apple Store app on newly purchased iOS devices during Personal Setup and introduce users to free content to the users.
