Is Microsoft already working on Windows Phone 8.5

Windows Phone 8 LogoWe know that Microsoft is working on an update to Windows 8, which is currently code-named Windows Blue. Microsoft has still to confirm that they are working on Windows Blue but rumors suggest that the update will merge the Windows and Windows Phone platforms. Other reports suggest that Windows Blue aims to add support for 7 and 8 inch Windows tablets. In any case we know updates to Windows and Windows Phone are coming and they are probably in the works, even though Microsoft has kept very silent about their progress so far.

However some new information suggests that Microsoft may be working on a Windows Phone 8.5 update behind closed doors.

The news comes from Greg Sullivan, senior product manager of Windows Phone, who told Pocket-lint that Microsoft is very much working on upgrades for Windows Phone. He said that three time as many people as last year are walking into stores asking for a Windows Phone device, and four times as many people are walking out with one.

This momentum along with the popularity of low-cost devices against direct competition has led to Microsoft deciding to hold back information on their next update. We found this news a little worrying, because the last time Microsoft held back information on their update plans, Windows Phone 7 users were left stuck on a dead platform.

In any case Microsoft has decided to work behind the scenes rather than announce the new details which will come with the update. Sullivan also said that they plan to wait six months before revealing any details on the update, and an additional five months before releasing devices to consumers. Based on that timeline we may not see a new Windows Phone platform until the 2013 holiday season.

We think Microsoft needs to work on releasing software updates to Windows Phone 8 and we hope the update which will come in the end of this year would be Windows Phone 9 with Windows Phone 8.5 making an earlier entrance to compete with the release of Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie. Let us know what you think in the comments section below.
