[Guide] How to re-install BlackBerry OS on a bricked device

There are several ways your BlackBerry smartphone may become bricked or 'nuked' as it is fondly referred to. One of the most common ways to brick your BlackBerry would be by installing custom, unofficial builds of it's software.

A bricked BlackBerry can be identified through it's permanent reboot cycle. Teh device would turn on with a red LED and then you will have a white screen with an hourglass before it shuts down. This cycle will go on for hours if you let it.

But all is not lost, you can follow our step-by-step guide on how to fix your bricked / nuked BlackBerry device and get your device working again.

Requirements
  • Download and install the latest version of BlackBerry Desktop Software on your computer
  • Download the most recent official version of the BlackBerry OS software for your bricked device
[NOTE] The following process will install a clean version of BlackBerry OS on your device. Any third party software which has been installed will be removed during this process.
[NOTE] You can use the following guide to simply install a clean version of BlackBerry OS if you simply feel your device is performing sluggishly. The guide is not restricted to bricked / nuked devices
  1. Make sure your device is not connected to the computer
  • Go to C: > Program Files > Common Files >Research In Motion > AppLoader Where C is the drive you have installed your Windows operating system.
  • Double Click and run 'Loader' and click Next.
  • Connect your BlackBerry device to your computer using the USB cable
  • When COM1 changes to USB-PIN:UNKNOWN immediately click Next

  • Select what you want to install on your BlackBerry (BlackBerry Messenger, BlackBerry Maps etc.)
  • Click Next and then Finish and wait for your device to be restored.
  • Once completed you will see 'The loading operating was successful' and the device will reboot.
  • Rebooting can take some time (10-15 mins) so unplug your device and wait for it to boot up.
  • Once you boot back up you can restore a device back up (if you have one) using the BlackBerry Desktop Software.
