After months of rumors and speculation, Motorola has finally lifted the covers off the low cost variant of the Moto X - The Motorola Moto G. The Moto G is destined to launch in markets where budget-friendly smartphones are in high demand and is built from the ground up with the idea of being the ultimate Android device in its price category.
Starting at just $179, you cant expect extravagance, but the Moto G is still a very powerful and capable device. First and foremost, our eyes are treated to a 4.5-inch "edge-to-edge" LCD display with a resolution of 720 by 1280 pixels. This gives us a figure of around 329ppi, which nothing short of great given the phone's cost. A layer of Gorilla Glass 3 protects the screen against light scratches.
Given its low price point, it comes as no surprise that the Motorola Moto G is made of plastic. But the device doesn't look cheap in any way. It has adopted many of the design cues we know from the Moto X, such as the curved back that makes the handset easy to hold. Motorola has even treated the device to a water-repelling nanocoating, protecting it from both outside and inside.
Motorola is giving us the option to swap the back cover of the Moto G with a new one of a different color. There are seven of them to pick from, available in white, black, dark blue, light blue, yellow, red, and pink. And if you want to personalize your Moto G further, bumpers and flip covers are to be made available along with the smartphone.
Under its hood, the Moto G is powered by a Snapdragon 400 quad-core processor. While this may not be as powerful as the Snapdragon 800 chip found in the most pricey flagships or even the Google Nexus 5, it proved itself as a capable performer on the Google Nexus 4.
Motorola will launch the Moto G with Android 4.3 out of the box. Save for a few minor optimizations, the stock look and feel of the OS have been retained, and that's great news as it will ensure the smooth performance of the device. Motorola also announced that they were also working on Android 4.4 KitKat, which will arrive on the device in January 2014.
Motorola Moto G - Specs The Motorola Moto G features a 4.5 inch HD touch display, 8GB of internal storage, a 5 MP rear camera, a 1.2 MP front facing camera and is powered by a quad-core 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. |
As we mentioned before, the Moto G will be priced at $179 which includes 8GB of internal storage. If you want more storage, you can opt for the 16GB model which will cost you only $199. Best of all these are all off contract prices.
Motorola is releasing the Moto G this week in Brazil and parts of Europe. Within the next few weeks, the smartphone will be made available throughout Latin America, more countries around Europe, Canada and parts of Asia. The US, India, the Middle East, and the rest of Asia will get it by early January. By 2014, Motorola will launch the Moto G in more than 30 countries with 60 partners.
