Microsoft recently started sending out invitations for its Xbox unveiling event, where they will give users a chance to get the first glimpse of their next generation gaming console.
Paul Thurrott, who is generally in the know about all things Microsoft, predicted that the company will unveil the next Xbox on May 21st. Though he initially stated that the event will take place on April 24th it turned out to be the day that Microsoft sent out invitations to the press.
Now Thurrott has shared his thoughts on what we can expect from the next generation Xbox.
Firstly he has stated that unlike Sony, Microsoft will be forthcoming on the details of their new console, at least from the end-user point of view. Meanwhile developers will have access to all the information they need during the BUILD conference, which is scheduled to be held in San Francisco in June.
The next Xbox is expected to run a Windows 8 core, which is being described as the base version of Windows 8. It will feature Blu-ray as standard which many gamers were disappointed the Xbox 360 missed out on. He also suggests that the next Xbox will have an "always-on" connection which users won't be too pleased about. However considering the large size of content from games and Sony's approach to downlaod while you play, it's likely we will be thankful for this feature once we have it.
Thurrott also suggest that Microsoft will release another Xbox 360, currently codenamed "Stingray". It will likely be cheaper than the current model and while he isn't certain of the rationale behind this, he believes Microsoft will continue to take advantage of the money its current console is bringing in. However with new titles in the years ahead focussing on the newer Xbox it will be interesting to see how long this variant of the Xbox 360 will be around.
Thurrott believe that the console will be launched in early November this year, with two very different pricing models. The standalone version is expected to cost $499, while a second option will be available for $299 which will require a two-year Xbox Live Gold membership of $10 a month. Microsoft is currently offering a similar deal for the Xbox 360, which can be purchased for $99 with the Gold membership attached on a monthly payment basis. Because of the various advantages of the Gold membership along with the ability to play online multiplayer, the latter model will definitely be very successful.
