Sony may have gotten ahead by announcing their next generation console, the PlayStation 4 back in February, but Microsoft is not planning on being left too far behind. Today the company has sent out invitations to an event which will take place on May 21st, 2013 at their Redmond headquarters.
Even though speculation of the next generation Xbox being named the Xbox 720 has been around for awhile now, the invitation simply reads "A New Generation Revealed". Microsoft has also revealed that Don Mattrick and the Xbox team will be unveiling the new console. The date ties in with previous reports which suggested that a pre-E3 event on May 21st would unveil Microsoft's next-gen console, however its nice to have an official confirmation.
Sony has been very secretive about their PlayStation 4, likely not wanting to give Microsoft an edge by allowing them to match their features. All we got to see from Sony so far is their next generation controller.
We hope that this won't be the same case with Microsoft as many gaming fans eagerly wait to see what the next Xbox is capable of. The Xbox 720 will likely be available in the market in time for the holiday season, around the same time that the PlayStation 4 will go on sale. Stay tuned for up to date information on the console's unveiling and the event on May 21st.
