BlackBerry 10 receives its first firmware update (10.0.9.2372)

Blackberry LogoThe BlackBerry team have been paying close attention to the feedback from their users and have released the first firmware update for the  platform. Some of the issues with the BlackBerry Z10 seems to have been the focus of this update, including improvements for poor battery life and enhancements in low light photo and video capture.

The update which brings software version 10.0.9.2372 is being offered OTA (over-the-air) and is 150MB in size. Users are advised to download the update over Wi-Fi to avoid data charges on this reasonably large update.

While the BlackBerry Z10 is capable of offering up to 8 hours and 20 minutes of talk time on a single charge according to tests done on the battery, which is quite reasonable. However it does trail on other factors like video playback and web browsing which results in the battery not lasting a full day on a single charge. The update claims to have made 60 improvements to the battery since launch and should hopefully result in a much better experience for users.

The other issue the Z10 faced was the poor performance of its camera when compared to other flagship devices like the Nokia Lumia 920, Apple iPhone 5 and the Samsung Galaxy S III. The update is expected to fix this issue and offer much better photos off the BlackBerry Z10 camera.

The update is also said to refine video playback in the browser and third party apps are now said to run faster and smoother. The GMail calendar is said to work better and there are improvements to the BlackBerry Hub in the way calls are logged and conversations handled. There are also improvements in the way contacts are imported from online sources. BlackBerry also states that new apps like WhatsApp are expected sometime this month.

Good hardware doesn't matter unless it has great software support, and the early signs indicate that BlackBerry is committed to offering the best experience to their users with this welcome timely update.
