[Guide] How to root your Amazon Kindle Fire


The Amazon Kindle Fire has been rooted, and Amazon has not made it hard to get it done. The guide which follows tells you how to root your tablet and get access to all the hidden features which can be enabled once your device has been rooted.

Please note that rooting can affect the overall performance of your device. Ensure you know the outcomes of rooting your device, and please do not attempt this unless you are aware of the reasons and consequences of wanting to root your device.

Enable ADB Access

You will first require ADB (Android Developer Bridge) access to your device. In order to do this you will have to add the Vendor ID for Amazon's Lab126 (0x1949) to the adb_usb.ini file.
  1. Download and install the Android SDK
    -
  2. Go to %USERPROFILE%\.android
    • edit the adb_usb.ini file
    • add the following line,
    • 0x1949
    • Save and Exit

  3. Navigate to where you installed the Android SDK,
    • Open the folder google-usb_driver
    • Locate and edit android_winusb.inf
    • Enter the following lines under [Google.NETx86] and [Google.NTamd64]
    • ;Kindle Fire %SingleAdbInterface% = USB_Install, USB\VID_1949&PID_0006 %CompositeAdbInterface% = USB_Install, USB\VID_1949&PID_0006&MI_01
    • Save and Exit

  4. Now you have enabled ADB access

Enable Root Access
  1. Connect your Kindle Fire to your computer
    -
  2. Enable Kindle Fire to install apps from unknown sources
    • Click the Kindle Fire Status Bar
    • Select Choose More
    • Head over to Device
    • And make sure that Allow Installation of Applications in enabled.

  3. Download the SuperOneClick tool (from XDA Developers)
    -
  4. Run SuperOneClick
    • Click on the Root button.
    • Allow the tool to install you will see some text displayed.
    • The device will restart as root
    • When you are asked if you want to run a test click 'Yes'.
    • Thats it, your device should now be rooted.
