Windows 8 Developer Preview

Today Microsoft released the Windows 8 Developer Preview following the BUILD conference. This is the first public release of the latest version of Windows which is set to bring a unified experience to all Windows based devices both in desktop and mobile form.

The Developer Preview is a pre-beta version of Windows and is primarily meant for developers to get an idea of the touch based application architecture in the next generation of Windows. The Developer Preview introduces a metro based user interface which was first seen in Windows Phones.

This tile based UI can be explored with touch and swipes. The tiles also provide live information and notifications corresponding to each app. You can rearrange the apps according to your preference and you are offered a full screen experience with each app.

The other major improvement is the Windows 8 lock-screen. Which offers a customizable experience with notifications and a clock with the date and time displayed.

You can now unlock Windows using a pin combination or by gestures.

Windows 8 offers real time multi tasking allowing you to switch between your favourite apps. You can even stack and view two applications side by side.

Microsoft has introduced a new task manager on Windows 8. A Simple task manager will allow you to take care of basic tasks while a detailed version is available for those looking to perform advanced tweaks.

The Windows Explorer has also seen some improvements with Windows 8. The Windows Ribbon UI which was first introduced in Office 2007 is now available on Windows 8. The new explorer allows you to perform actions faster than ever before. Microsoft has even added native ISO support on Windows 8 which is very welcome.

It doesn't stop there. Microsoft has introduced system-wide spell-checking, system-wide search, Refresh your PC which allows to perform a clean install of Windows with just a press of a button.
