Motorola Moto X (2014) starts receiving Android 5.0 Lollipop update amidst soak test

Motorola Moto X (2014)

Motorola has recently made it a habit of bringing quick Android updates for their devices. Last year, it was able to push the Android 4.4 KitKat update to its Moto X before Google got the update out to the Nexus 4. This year we may see the new Moto X beat the Nexus 5 with Android 5.0 Lollipop.

We say "may" as the update hasn't officially started rolling out yet. Motorola is still in the phase is soak testing Lollipop for its newest flagship. However, it seems as though some users who weren't signed up for Motorola's beta program are also getting the update. On top of that, the OTA file from the soak test has also been posted, allowing anyone with an unrooted Moto X (2014) to simply download the OTA file and manually update their devices to Android Lollipop.

Right now, the update is only for the "Pure Edition" unlocked version of the new Moto X. We'd assume that it was simply a mistake that Lollipop went out to those who weren't signed up for the soak test, though. Of course, Motorola might have wider plans. The post has already been pulled, but Motorola also put up the Android 5.0 release notes for the Motorola Moto G (2014) as well.

Meanwhile the Google Nexus 6 is still expected to be the first smartphone to have Lollipop pre-installed, when it is launched on November 12. The other Nexus devices are expected to get Lollipop around that time, and we expect Motorola may also begin an official rollout to correspond with Google's release.
