The Google Nexus 9 is now official, as the company has taken the wraps off its first HTC built tablet. The Nexus 9 comes with an 8.9 inch display and the Android 5.0 Lollipop experience. Lets take a closer look at Google's newest slate and what it has to offer.
Design
The Nexus 9 is manufactured by HTC, and the company's influence is clear in the design of the device. You get dual front-facing speakers, which is a signature for HTC, and you get a brushed aluminum frame rather than a full metal body, likely meant to keep the device affordable. The tablet has a 7.9mm (0.31") thin waist and it weighs 425g (0.94 lbs) for its Wi-Fi model, while the LTE version weighs a little more. The new Nexus tablet will come in a choice of Indigo Black, Lunar White, and Sand (available later).
The display on the tablet is 8.9 inches in size with a resolution of 2048 by 1536 pixels. That results in a pixel density of around 288 ppi, which should be sharp and crisp. The 4:3 aspect ratio of the tablet is similar to that of the Apple iPad.
Battery Life
Google's new tablet comes with a large, 6700mAh battery that will last around 9 hours, according to the official specifications.
Processor and Hardware
The Nexus 9 is the first tablet to be powered by the NVIDIA Tegra K1 chip, This chip uses a dual-core 64-bit Denver CPU core architecture. Denver is an impressively large core with a desktop-class, wide, 7-issue superscalar design, with clock speeds of up to 2.3GHz. It also comes with a large amount of L1 cache: 128K+64K (I$/D$). Interestingly, Denver is rumored to have originally been designed with desktop machines in mind, but eventually it ended up on mobile devices.
Google will offer the Nexus 9 in a 16GB and 32GB model, and since there is no external storage, you will have to choose the model which serves you best.
The tablet comes with 2GB of RAM, and it also features the Kepler with 192 shader cores that has shown it performs at the top of its class, making the Nexus 9 a great choice for gamers.
Software
Google's newest tablet will come with Android 5.0 Lollipop (Android L release) pre-installed. Android Lollipop features a new ‘Material design’ language based on flat shapes and realistic shadows to subtly convey structure. It comes with a redesign of the icons, and a refresh of the looks of Android with neat, snappy animations.

Google has also introduced several under the hood improvements and enhancements with Lollipop, which also sets the foundation for a future of 64-bit Android devices. It also introduces the new ART runtime that replaces Dalvik, and this 64-bit-compatible environment is ready to transform existing Java apps into 64-bit without any effort from the developer.
Since the Nexus 9 comes with a 64-bit capable processor, it will be able to take full advantage of the 64-bit architecture of Lollipop.
Pricing and Availability
The 16GB version of the Nexus 9 with Wi-Fi connectivity will cost you $399, as Google moves away from its affordable Nexus pricing model. 32GB of storage will cost you $479 while adding 4G LTE connectivity will increase the price to $599.
If you are purchasing the Nexus 9 in the United States, you can get it from the Google Play Store, Amazon, Best Buy, Staples, Walmart, and others, with availability starting on November 12th. T-Mobile will be selling the cellular version.
