Windows Phone 8 - Features revealed

A report has revealed some of the features which will be available on Windows Phone 8 (codenamed Apollo).

The information comes from a video hosted by senior vice president and Windows Phone Manager Joe Belfiore, and was intended for partners at Nokia.

HARDWARE - Windows Phone 8 (Apollo) will add support for multi-core processors, new screen resolutions, and removable microSD cards. It is evident that Microsoft is working hard on closing the gap with iOS and Android devices in terms of hardware.

WINDOWS 8 INTEGRATION - Developers will be able to easily port their apps between the Microsoft desktop, tablet and smartphone platforms as Windows Phone 8 will use many of the same components as Windows 8. Kenel, networking stacks, security and multimedia support were suggested to be areas of heavy overlap.

Windows Phone 8 will not rely on the desktop Zune Suite. It will instead have a syncing relationship with a dedicated companion application.

Thanks to seamless syncing between Zune, Windows Live and Xbox services users could potentially have their music collection available on a newly purchased Windows Phone without the need of a PC sync.

APPLICATIONS - Applications will include native code support in Windows Phone 8, which will enable more powerful applications and the ability to easily port code from programs developed for iOS or Android.

Support for app to app communication and integrated Skype client will also be part of the Windows 8 experience.

The camera application will be a basic interface which can be skinned and enhanced by the OEM

DATA MANAGEMENT - A new feature called DataSmart will be introduced to reduce and simplify the tracking of data usage. The feature will aim to reduce data consumption by attempting to search for an connect to available Wi-Fi connections and detect carrier owned WLANs using the Local Scout feature on Windows Phone. A Live tile will be available to monitor your data usage.

Internet Explorer 10 which will be a part of Windows Phone 8 will use a proxy server and take advantage of service side compression to reduce data usage.

BUSINESS SUPPORT - 128-bit Bitlocker encryption and Secure Boot capabilities will be natively available on Windows Phone 8. Businesses will be able to privately deploy applications with their organization as they would Windows apps.

Exchange ActiveSync policies,System Centre configuration settings and inventory capabilities will be supported.

Microsoft aims to make their Windows Phone offering  as feature rich as it's competitors and bring a desktop similar experience to the Windows Phone.
