[Guide] How to install Android 4.0.3 on the Amazon Kindle Fire

The Amazon Kindle Fire brings it's own flavour of Android to the company's first tablet. The device features a 7 inch display, 8GB of internal storage, Wi-Fi and is powered by a dual-core processor with a price tag of just $199.

While the Kindle Fire gives users access to a score of Amazon services, not everyone is satisfied with the heavily customized Android experience. So for all those out there who want to try out the latest, you may want to check out our following guide on how to install Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) on your Amazon Kindle Fire tablets.

The ROM which is based on MIUI is still in an alpha stage, but said to be stable. Features like USB tethering, static wallpapers, hardware acceleration and themes still don't work, but will be fixed in future builds.

NOTE - Please backup your data before you proceed as the process of flashing this or any ROM on the Kindle Fire will wipe the device clean.

NOTE - This is not an official release of Android nor is it a ROM supported by Amazon. You will loose access to the Amazon services generally available through the Kindle Fire.

DISCLAIMER - This site nor the developers of this ROM will take responsibility for any loss of data or device malfunction which may occur from following this guide. Please proceed at your own risk.

Before proceeding with the guide please make sure you;

  1. Root your Kindle Fire.
  2. Flash a custom recovery
With these out of the way you can proceed with the step by step guide
  1. Download the latest version of MIUI for the Kindle Fire based on Android 4.0.3.
  2. Copy the downloaded .zip file onto your device to /sdcard
  3. Once you have copied the file turn your device off.
  4. Boot into your custom recovery mode (eg: ClockworkMod Recovery)
  5. Take a NANDROID backup using your custom recovery tool. You can use this backup to revert back if you encounter any problems.
  6. Performa  complete wipe and factory reset from teh custom recovery.
  7. Flash the ROM you transfered in step 1 to your device
    • install zip from sdcard > choose zip from sdcard > (zip file name)
  8. Wipe both the cache and the Dalvik cache
  9. Reboot your device.
Now you should have Android 4.0.3 ICS running on your Amazon Kindle Fire.
