Nokia Lumia 1520 officially announced


The Nokia Lumia 1520 was officially announced today, during the Nokia World 2013 keynote. The Lumia 1520 brings alot of first for Nokia, including being the first phablet, its also the first to feature a 6 inch 1080p full HD display from the company. It is also the first Windows Phone and the first from Nokia to be powered by a quad-core processor.

Lets take a closer look at the device itself and device into some of the features which makes it unique among the plethora of Android competitors in the market.


Design

The Lumia 1520 measures in at 162.8 x 85.4 x 8.7 mm and weighs 209 grams. It has wireless charging built in and comes in black, white, red and yellow. More colors maybe offered down the line based on the popularity of the device.


Nokia has even decided to include a microSD card slot on the Lumia 1520, allowing you to expand past the limitation of the internal storage. This is a useful feature on such a large device, since you will likely store many of your videos for watching on the go. Nokia has also used a nano SIM with the Lumia 1520, which is the same as whats used on the newest iPhones.


Specifications

Firstly you are greeted by a generous 6 inch display which has a 1080 by 1920 pixel resolution. That amounts to a 367 ppi pixel density, allowing for an additional third column of Live Tiles for the first time in Windows Phone. The display features the PureMotion HD+ technology coupled with Nokia's ClearBlack filter which should offer superior sunlight legibility, with excellent contrast and reflectivity ratios, great viewing angles, vivid colors and ultra fast refresh rates.


An enormous 3400 mAh battery will keep the device running, with a promise of up to 25 hours of talk-time and 11 hours of video playback. Along with managing the high resolution display, the battery also has to handle the powerful quad-core processor that is powering the device.

Nokia has managed to match some of the most powerful Android handsets in the market by including a 2.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor with the Lumia 1520, making it the most powerful Windows Phone in the market and the first to feature a quad-core CPU. You also have 2GB of RAM managing your data efficiently.


20.7 MP PureView camera

If you were wondering how the hardware specifications of the Lumia 1520 make it stand out against its competitors, you don't have to look further than its PureView camera. Nokia has included a 20.7 megapixel sensor with Carl Zeiss lens, improved Panorama and optical image stabilization. The camera alone takes the Lumia 1520 ahead of all its phablet competitors. Since the sensor is a scaled down version of the 41 MP sensor in the Lumia 1020, it will also offer 2x lossless zoom in stills mode, and 4x for HD video capture.

The maximum usable resolution is 18 MP in 4:3 aspect ratio, meaning we will be getting an oval sensor like in the Lumia 1020 flagship. The dual capture mode will bring 5 MP images in automatic mode with the pixel-binning technology that combines the information of four or more pixels into a "perfect" one. A full 16 MP wide aspect mode is also available, meant for for the ultimate detail capture.


The new Nokia Camera app which has been included with the Lumia 1520 combines all the camera modes into one super app. Nokia has also introduced a new Storyteller app which comes the HERE location services with the photos and video, to allow a seamless story of where you have visited. These new features will be a part of an update codenamed 'Nokia Black' which comes combined with Windows Phone 8 GDR3 and should be headed to other Lumia devices soon.

The Lumia 1520 also comes with a record four HAAC microphones, which promises the device will be a winner in sound recording and call quality compared to its competitors.


Pricing and Availability

The Nokia Lumia 1520 is a premium phablet and as expected, it comes with a premium price of $749. The device is expected to be headed soon to AT&T which should offer it at a subsidized pricing.
