MediaTek announces first true octa-core processor

MediaTek has announced the world's first true octa core processor. Unlike the Samsung Exynos 5 octa-core processor, which only uses four active cores at a time, MediaTek's processor runs all eight cores at the same time. This results in smoother gaming, web browsing and video playback along with improved battery performance. MediaTek also claims that the eight cores can be used without overheating

MediaTek is known for selling low priced chips to device manufacturers in an attempt to compete in emerging markets. Purchasing chips from MediaTek instead of larger manufactures like Qualcomm allows manufactures to save a lot of money. The company has already managed to acquire more that 50% of the market share for low and mid-range chips for mobile phones. Now with their octa-core MT6592 chip they have the potential to overtake Qualcomm to become the largest chip maker in the market.

The company needs to focus on getting one of the larger OEMs to use their MT6592 chip in one of their flagship devices before their competitors can produce octa core chips of their own. The MediaTek chip is being sent out to potential customers now for them to sample, with mass production scheduled in November.
