[Guide] How to unlock the Google Nexus 4 Bootloader



The Google Nexus 4 was launched recently and offers great value for money at just $299 on the Google Play Store. The developer community seems to have recognized that this device will go on to be a success as they have already released a method to unlock the Nexus 4 bootloader, in a attempt to tweak and mod every aspect of the device.

You can follow our step-by-step guide on how to unlock your Google Nexus 4 bootloader below.

[NOTE] Unlocking the bootloader will erase everything on your device. We suggest it is best to unlock your device before you proceed with installing your apps and settings onto your device. Have your data backed up before you proceed.

[NOTE] Before you proceed you will have to download fastboot for your specific computer operating system. You know also need to have knowledge of entering commands to your command prompt (terminal) and the USB cable supplied with your Nexus 4.
  1. Switch off your device and reboot it into fastbook mode. You can do this by holding the Volume Down + Power buttons simultaneously.

  2. Connect your device to your computer, open your command prompt (terminal) and navigate to the folder containing the fastboot program.

  3. Type fastboot devices on terminal and you should see your device ID. This confirms that fastboot is setup properly.

  4. Next type fastboot oem unlock on terminal and follow the prompts on your device display. During this process the device will be lost during the process, so make sure you have your data backed up.
Once completed the device will reboot and it will be unlocked. If you want to reverse the process and lock your bootloader, follow the steps of the guide and enter fastboot oem lock as your last command.
