[Guide] How to convert your mini SIM or micro SIM to a nano SIM

SIM cardLast year we looked at how to convert a mini SIM to a micro SIM as many manufacturers chose to add micro SIM support to their devices over the traditional min SIM card. This year the new Apple iPhone 5 has been released with a new nano SIM which is even smaller than the previous micro SIM.

You would likely receive a new nano SIM when you purchase a new iPhone 5 with a connection, but anyone who doesn't have a nano SIM can use the following guide on how to convert your mini SIM or micro SIM to a nano SIM.

[NOTE] Before proceeding keep in mind that manually re sizing your SIM card may not work for everyone. You can permanently damage your SIM if the metal connectors on the SIM are accidentally damaged.

[NOTE]  The nano SIM is not only smaller, but also around 15 percent thinner than previous SIM cards. You will have to shave the SIM down to the 0.67mm thickness of the nano SIM before it fits and unless done precisely you could risk permanently damaging your SIM card.

[NOTE] It is very likely you may damage the SIM on first try. Please practice on a couple of old SIM card first before you proceed on a usable SIM card.

You will require the following items before you get started
  • Printer
  • A4 Sheet (Or similar)
  • Tape
  • Straight Edge Ruler
  • Marker
  • Scissors (sharp)
  • Sandpaper
Once you have all your items ready
  1. Download and print this document on your A4 sheet.
  2. Place your current SIM card (mini or micro) on the designated area
  3. Ensure the SIM is firmly aligned in the space. You can stick it in place using a piece of tape.
  4. Use the ruler and marker to accurately draw lines along the SIM to mark where you need to cut it.
  5. Use your (sharp) scissor to cut the SIM along the lines. Please note that this can damage your SIM card permanently.
  6. Carefully smooth out any jagged edges while ensuring you don't damage any circuitry.

There are several adapters and cutters which will also help you through this process and you will find them listed here. Keep in mind that you will not only have to make your SIM smaller, but also thinner to fit the new iPhone 5, so we advise you to do the proper research before purchasing a SIM cutter tool.
