[Guide] How to jailbreak and Unlock iOS 5.1 using Redsn0w (tethered)

Apple iOS 5.1 was released yesterday and it has already been jailbroken. It works on all iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch which support iOS 5.1 except the iPhone 4S, iPad 2 and of course the unreleased new iPad.

Unfortunately this is still a tethered jailbreak, which means you will have to connect to your computer every time you want to restart your device into it's jailbroken state. While a Semi-Tether patch is available, it's functionality are extremely limited and we would advise users to hold on until the untethered jailbreak has been released.

Meanwhile if you do want to try the tethered jailbreak a step by step guide on how to jailbreak iOS 5.1 using RedSn0w follows:

DISCLAIMER - The process of jailbreaking and unlock your iOS device can cause you to loose your device warranty. The process may also result in you loosing your data or making your device un-usable and this site nor the developers of the jailbreak will not be held responsible. Please do not procceed unless you are aware of these issues and that you will be proceeding at your own risk.

NOTE - If you rely on the UltraSn0w unlock or GEVEY do not update to the stock firmware . Please look out for the [UNLOCKER] tag during the process of the guide. You will have to create a custom ROM and preserve your baseband during the following process.

  2. Select Extras
  3. Select Just Boot
  4. Your device will now be booted into tethered jailbreak state
BOOTING SEMI-TETHERED (optional)
The Semi-Tether patch will allow you to boot into iOS 5.1 in a jailbroken state without the need of a computer. However since the features of jailbreak will be limited by this process, it is only recommended as an extra precaution. To enable the Semi-tether patch
  1. Open Cydia Once you have completed the jailbreak
  2. Click Search
  3. Type SemiTether
The Semi Tether patch should be available under the BigBoss repo - http://thebigboss.org/semitether and should not require changing your sources
