Nokia N8 - Still the top camera phone

The Nokia N8 which is more than 15 months old, still rules the roost as top camera phone according to a review done by TechRadar. Nokia has continued to support their flagship cameraphone first with the Symbian Anna update which will soon be followed by Symbian Belle.

The N8 had some heavy competition in the form of the Apple iPhone 4S, Samsung Galaxy SII, HTC Evo 3D, Motorola XT720 and Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc

The six devices are put through some vigorous lab tests and the conclusion favors the Nokia N8 which comes out on top.

Although it doesn't have the flexibility of the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc, Apple iPhone 4S and Samsung Galaxy S2, the Nokia N8 is nevertheless easy to get to grips with and it generally turns out the best images. In fact, in good light the amount of detail that can be recorded by this phone is on a par with some top-end compact cameras.

In terms of all round image quality the battle is really between the iPhone 4S and the N8. The N8 is capable of capturing the most detail...

The winner of this test is the Nokia N8 - but only in terms of providing the best pictures quality in the widest range of areas. If you're looking for the phone on the market that will offer you the best pictures in a wide variety of scenarios, we'd suggest you plump for this phone. However, it is slightly ageing now and the software is among the hardest to use on smartphone - although the incoming Nokia Belle update should remedy that somewhat.

The iPhone 4S is also given it's due credit

It's swift, so easy to use that a technophobic penguin could operate it and offers great pictures on the fly. It might not give you the absolute maximum a cameraphone can muster in every scenario, but it's a jack of all scenes and a master of many of them too.

It's not easy to maintain top position in this ever evolving mobile market and the Nokia N8 has managed to do just that. One key factor that clearly pushes is forward is it's Xenon flash which is only available on the Android powered XT720. The Xenon flash is the same flash which powers normal cameras and offers powerful illumination in low light conditions.

Phone OEMs favour LED flash on their devices due to it's lower power consumption, but an LED flash is no match for it's Xenon counterpart in low light conditions.

While Apple has still to implement Xenon flash on their iPhone, you will find a very few Android devices including the XT720 that feature Xenon flash. In the Windows Phone department the HTC 7 Mozart is the only device which features the powerful flash.

Nokia is rumoured to already be working on their successor to the N8. Hopefully they wont make the same mistake they made with the Nokia N86 and exclude Xenon on their next generation flagship cameraphone. If it's one thing the Nokia N82 made clear while it ruled the camera phone roost, If you don't have Xenon you have no business being the king of camera phones.
