[Guide] How to Jailbreak iOS 5 using Sn0wbreeze 2.8b8 (tethered)



This guide will demonstrate jailbreaking iOS 5 on the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad and iPod Touch 3G and iPod Touch 4G using Redsn0w 0.9.9b5. The iPhone 4S and iPad 2 are currently not supported by this jailbreak method.



NOTE - Jailbreaking your device may void it's warranty. While jailbreaking is not illegal Apple warns users that jailbreaking may cause issues with your software and instability of your system. Please do not attempt to jailbreak your device unless you are aware of the consequences of the process and the advantages/disadvantages of jailbreaking.

NOTE - Jailbreaking is a process that ads features to your device not available in Apple's software. The process and support is managed by the iPhone Dev-Team. Please carefully read the notices and declaimers before proceeding with jailbreaking as certain processes may be irreversible

iBooty - The iBooty 2.3 is automatically created by Sn0wbreeze when you create a custom firmware. It should be located in your desktop. You will have to use iBooty every time you reboot your device to enter into jailbroken state.


  1. Download iOS 5 for your particular iOS device (iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch)
  2. Download and Sn0wbreeze
  3. Run Sn0wbreeze

    1. Click on the blue arrow on the bottom right to go to the next page

    2. Click on Browse and select your IPSW file you downloaded in the first step

    3. Sn0wbreeze will detect your the device and firmware version.
    Make sure your information is correct and click the blue arrow to go to the next page

    4. If you need to unlock your device select 'Expect Mode' on this screen
    and click the blue arrow to go to the next screen

    5. In this screen you can select 'Build IPSW' if you don't have anything else to do.
    Then click the blue arrow to go to the next screen

    6. This screen will show Sn0wbreeze progress in creating the custom IPSW file.
    The process will take some time so sit back and wait till it is complete

    7. When completed you will get this screen, click 'OK' to continue

    8. If all goes well, you will be prompted to set your device into DFU mode.
    Follow the on-screen prompts and you should have no problems.
  4. Install custom firmware
    • Ensure your device is connected to your computer
    • Open iTunes and locate your connected device on the iTunes sidebar and select it.
    • Click Restore while holding the Shift key on your keyboard
    • Browse and select your modified (jailbroken) firmware
    • Allow iTunes to install your custom firmware on your device
  5. Booting into Jailbroken mode (tethered)
1. Launch iBooty (from desktop) and select your device from the drop down list on the bottom  right.
Then click Start. iBooty may start automatically once you have Jailbroken your device.

2. Once the process is done, you will be instructed to unplug your device.
Do not do so until instructed.
